Summary - Thor (Chris Hemsworth) is imprisoned by the fire demon Surtur (Clancy Brown) in Muspelheim, who reveals that Thor"s father Odin (Sir Anthony Hopkins) is no longer on Asgard. He explains that the realm will soon be destroyed during the prophesied Ragnarök, once Surtur unites his crown with the Eternal Flame that burns in Odin"s vault. Thor frees himself, defeats Surtur, and takes his crown, believing he has prevented Ragnarök. Thor returns to Asgard to find Heimdall (Idris Elba) gone and his brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) posing as Odin. After exposing Loki, Thor forces him to help find their father, and with directions from Dr. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) on Earth, they locate Odin in Norway. Odin explains that he is dying, and Ragnarök is imminent despite Thor"s efforts to prevent it. Hela was the leader of Asgard"s armies, conquering the Nine Realms with Odin, but Odin imprisoned her and wrote her out of history after he feared that she had become too ambitious and powerful. Odin dies as Thor and Loki watch on, and Hela appears, destroying Thor"s Hammer Mjölnir. She pursues the two as they attempt to flee through the Bifröst Bridge, forcing them out into space. Arriving on Asgard, she defeats its army and kills the Warriors Three. She then resurrects the ancient dead who once fought with her, including her giant wolf Fenris, and appoints the Asgardian Skurge (Karl Urban) as her executioner. But then again, the modern version is so fucking tame considering it"s only the players that are in danger, rather than what happens while playing affecting the real world until they finish.

You make a lot of sense though. In Jumanji 1, Parrish remembered the kids, but not vice versa. Alex shouldn"t even remember the 4 protagonists" true form. and vice versa... I thought the trailers were terrible, and I had never been a big fan of most of the actors, apart from Lili Reinhart. It just didn"t look like a movie that I would connect with, but I did.
Everyone was great, and the standout for me was Jennifer Lopez. I"m even suspecting that she might get nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category at the Oscars, but I could be wrong about that. Reinhart is also phenomenal, and so is Constance Wu.
The story is engaging and directed incredibly well. The majority of it takes place a few years ago when the "hustling" took place, but then it"s intercut with an interview in the present day which allows us to see that something bad obviously happened between the women. This then makes the other scenes riveting, as you are constantly wondering what happened and waiting for the catalyst to become apparent.
I don"t really have any issues with Hustlers, but it"s far from a masterpiece. I am going high with my score, but it wasn"t one of my favourites from 2019. I"m fine with that, though, because I thought it would end up in my bottom 20 and it"s a movie that I plan to watch over and over again.

One of the most critically acclaimed movies of 2019 has to be the crime thriller Uncut Gems, directed by Josh and Bennie Safdie. Centered around a gambling jeweler who needs to retrieve an expensive gem to pay off his debts in New York City"s Diamond District, the film took the sibling duo nearly ten years to get the green light, and all their films prior were actually made so they could prepare for a project this intense. It all seemed to pay off, as the film is not only gaining massive attention, but also Adam Sandler being the leading role (this could be the best performance of his career no less.
Now with a crazy premise comes the crazy main protagonist Howard Ratner, played by Sandler, who really hones his skills bringing to life Ratner"s anxious and rambunctious personality to make the viewing experience all the more chaotic. The sneaky and unethical persona of Ratner is what drives the whole feature, and despite him being a horrible human being with no proper care of the people around him, everything he ends up doing just to push the limits on his schemes makes the narrative all the more fascinating. His main drive for success is trying to boost up the price range of his possessed gem opal so he can finally pay off his debts, but given the hypnotic power from those gems, it really comes from a place of deranged madness, which does not help at all given the shady situation he gets in with the goons who need the money or else the consequences will be severe. I think the best way to compare the pacing and tone of the film are like a giant house made of cards waiting to collapse: you don"t want it to fall down but you know exactly what"s gonna happen nonetheless.
Although set in a realistic environment, the filmmaking does wondrous accomplishments with its limitations, like shooting a lot of the shots up close to create uncomfortability and fast paced cuts to create paranoia. The cinematography also allows for some scenes to be presented in a colorful albeit somber approach which establish the mood very well given how frightening the character is. All the gleam and glamour in some scenes help contrast with the more mundane and gritty approach to the more serious stakes that affect Howard"s life. In addition, while the movie is riddled with humor, it"s a more dry and insane type of comedy that blends in well with the film"s urban atmosphere. This adds in to the discomfort from the characters, as they"re always needing to either escape, get into or out of things, or just get what they"re looking for. Lastly, the way they incorporated the soundtrack with the audio presents a lot of impressive sound mixing and loud tension that creates as much anxiety as what Howard faces throughout.
In the words of critic Sheila O"Malley, Uncut Gems is "not a "cautionary tale" about the dangers of gambling. It"s more like a virtual-reality game where you step into Howard"s experience." Character studies are wonderful enough in their own right if done properly, but the added layers of insanity and impatience makes the film a truly thrilling experience that never seizes to run out of steam. If you prefer Sandler"s filmography as only an actor or you"re a Safdie brothers fan, then this should be worth a watch, as you don"t often get these types of gems playing in the mainstream.
